No, people in the UK get punched or stabbed, it is not worth the conductor risking injury that can put them out of work for a long time. I work on the railway, and I've spoken to conductors for Scotrail on training courses, there are parts of the railway where they are allowed to simply not collect tickets at certain times of the week because there have been attacks in the past.

I know you might think it's their job to deal with these situations, but the reality is that if they do try, they can either get hurt or land in trouble legally. It's nothing to do with being spineless.
