There's a polarisation effect taking place. The more there were differentials in the past, the more extreme they are now.

I'm REALLY generalising here but if you have wealthier parents they are more likely to be educated and/or work in higher paid or professional jobs. Those parents will encourage their children, maybe pay for private schools or tuition, help children onto the housing ladder etc. Basically put their children in a place where they themselves are more likely to be wealthier.

In poorer areas it'll be a lot harder to get a good start as people cannot afford to give their children the same advantages. Doesn't mean that the children are fucked, it just means they'll have a harder journey.

Now apply that across generations, with the differences growing. Add in the cost of university education, fewer higher paid jobs etc and you've got a widening gap.

That's how it seems to me. There's always been a divergence but it was smaller in the past.
