It's not always starvation (well it wasn't, in the current climate I don't want to assume that any more), but cheap, easy bulky foods are rarely healthy. I know, I know, I can do amazing things with lentils, dried chickpeas and butter beans will cook in my instant pot and be delicious and nutritious, at least when I mix them with some of the lovely spices I have in my well stocked cupboard. I'm lucky to have that and I work 40 hours a week in just one well paid job. But if someone is exhausted and has a basic kitchen and literally can't afford to make the choice to buy the pack of stir fry veg and a couple of bananas, then a box of cheap sugary cereal, some basics super noodles and a 30p pack of biscuits to feel like a treat is a much more realistic option.

I'm pretty sure I could gain weight on £1 a day if I set my mind to it. 3 packets of cheap Lidl biscuits and I'm well over my 1500 cals a day. .
