If what you did was tell 2 polis on the street get your mate to go into an office and file a lost report. Those get sent to the custodiers at found property and they match up anything handed in with anything reported lost.
If you told 2 cops on the street they'd have kept an eye out for it but unlikely they filled in a lost report.
