Would never give them money straight-up, will offer to buy them food about 25% of the time. That percentage seems to match the proportion of beggars who genuinely give the impression that might otherwise be starving on the streets without it. Though for every homeless person who's overjoyed to see a ham sandwich there's someone who refuses your diet coke because they only like coke zero.
