I feel like it's a UK thing, and it's just wild to see how shocked people are when you reveal that the French "apéro" is not something we do every night, but at most just on weekends, and even then – often for special occasions / when you have guests / when the weather is nice. Had to explain a few years back to my thesis supervisor that I absolutely would not drink a glass of wine every night to unwind, and that it would be considered alcohol dependency at best, if not alcoholism.

On the other hand, I'll never forget the first time I saw a group of middle-aged ladies open a bottle of prosecco on the train, all equipped with their glasses, and cheering ceremoniously like they were at a fancy restaurant – and getting very drunk astonishingly fast after that, so maybe they were not that used to drinking, who knows. That was quite a scene to witness, still.
