It’s a weird one, I spent most of my childhood in the 80s/early 90s there and there was a lot of Irish older people around then.

But the town did have an Irish flavour, nothing I’d have thought was out of the ordinary as a kid but lots of Irish Dancing clubs, schools/parishes named after Ireland’s patron saints, St Patrick’s day celebrations etc…

Out of 30 odd kids in my primary class I can only think of two that didn’t have an Irish surname for example.

Was only after I moved elsewhere in Scotland that I realised these things didn’t happen everywhere.

Nowadays there’s definitely less people who were born in Ireland but also a resurgence of Irish Culture.

There’s a St Patrick’s Festival, a Comhaltas, The GAA have a development programme, Irish Heritage centre etc..

As a caveat though if you didn’t take part in any of these things and your kids went to ND schools then the only things you would probably notice are the original parade/march etc..

It’s not mandatory to drink Guinness or kick about in Celtic tops with shamrock hats on basically.

So the answer to your question is that most remaining native Irish are likely to be quite old now, there is a huge population of Irish descent and lots of Irish culture there.

Whether the inhabitants consider themselves Irish, Irish-Scots, Scots of Irish descent or Scottish is another question entirely though.
