You shouldn't offer more than what they want. It will get you a better chance because who turns down money? But, it's expensive enough as-is.

If you can prove you have a stable income and have no reason to concern the landlord you'll have a better chance of being picked. They don't just pick a name at random, they're going to look at all available information and circumstances before they pick someone.

Viewings for me went as follows:

* 1. You arrange with the estate agent to go view at a time/day.
* 2. You look around and decide if you like it.
* 3. You let the estate agent know ASAP and they put your name in a metaphorical hat with everyone else that's interested.
* 4. The landlord picks someone.
* 5. You get a call back telling you that you won.
* 6. You head into the estate agent office and they'll give you the tenancy agreement to sign and take a deposit.
* 7. Bring ID with you, along with proof of income (payslips and bank statements) and if possible something addressed to you at your current address like a utility bill or paper statement.
* 8. Agree a move in date, they'll give you the keys.
* 9. You now have a flat.
