I think everyone's coming down a bit hard on OP here.

He's obviously feeling frustrated at the current state of affairs which given the circumstances, isn't actually unreasonable.

He's right. Most people do not have enough to live on, and it's depressing to say that a lot of people are essentially working 5 out of 7 days most of our lives to be able to put the heating on and not sleep outside. Now I'm maybe using the worst off as an example here, but this scales as people earn more too.

For example someone who earned 35k+ a few years ago, in Glasgow would be comfortable.

With bills, goods and food etc all at record highs, that 35k now is worth a lot less.

Ops example of what they have as expenses is being generous. It's not assuming they have a car, any debt at all, kids or dependants etc. It's entirely possible to take OPs heating and food numbers and essentially double them for a partner and child. You also lose certain benefits like a single person discount on council tax in a couple so things cost more.

We shouldn't have to be earning far above the average salary to be able to drive and buy the odd few things here and there when we want them, let alone be able to save for a mortgage or a holiday or whatever else we want.

It feels like salary and money is being used as points you spend to survive in a 1984 esque slave simulator.
