There were slave owners on both sides so that wouldn’t work would it? The flag represented the states who left the union.
I’m obviously not trying to say owner slaves were good or that the outcome of the civil war and the freer of slaves was anything but the best outcome.
However to simplify that the US civil war was only about slavery is wrong. Therefore I can understand the flag has a cultural element to some people around the southern states joining together and being a independent country instead of part of the wider US. |
