I can relate to a lot of what you're saying - I struggle with counter service because of my eyesight, especially in dim lighting. Sometimes (often) staff can be so hipsterish it's almost intimidating, and if you can't pronounce the name of the dish, or if you're taking too long to decide, the stress isn't worth the experience.
That said, I think Pizza Express is very overpriced, but if I'm travelling within the UK and don't know a place well, at least with Pizza Express I'm fairly sure I won't get food poisoning.
