We got a dog before we had kids. Lived in a flat and both had full time jobs including night and weekend work. It was hard even between two of us. Had to always get back for the dog. No after work pints. Felt guilty about leaving again in the evenings so no more restaurant or cinema trips. No more going shopping all day and staying out for dinner. Had to stay in dog friendly hotels all the time which really limits the options. No trips abroad. Or else beg a family member or friend to take your dog for a week which is a big ask. Plus cause we were in a flat house training was hard and it took ages to get her to stop peeing in the flat - we never really did. It would have maybe been ok if we were able to take more than a couple of weeks off at a time to do it properly. Dog walkers cost about £2-300+ a month. Then there’s insurance which is about £15/month. Plus food, toys etc it all adds up to thousands of pounds a year. Then if somebody comes over who is allergic to dogs or scared of dogs that’s a problem. And in years to come if you host a children’s party there’s the constant worry that a kid will pull its tail and it will snap at them.

It’s a huge commitment. If I was single I wouldn’t do it in a million years, and even when our current dog goes I maybe wouldn’t get another one cause it does lose you quite a lot more freedom than you think.
