I am in a similar situation where my wife and I got a dog together nearly five years ago.

Since May this year I’ve been on my own and making sure he’s well cared for is a big undertaking. I’m still trying to find a balance with work commitments and he ends up alone for a good few hours or in kennels/staying with a friend/family member a couple of times a month at least.

It’s expensive and I feel guilty about leaving him all over the shop rather than being at home where he’s happiest. It’s expensive and restricts my freedom a lot. You’re also on the hook for walks regardless of your own health. I’ve had some sort of virus these past 3-4 days and have had to drag myself out twice a day despite feeling like a bag of cold shite.

Having said all that he’s an amazing wee guy and I wouldn’t change him. He’s been here for me through a very difficult period in my life and is just cracking company. It’s tough going but you get out of it what you put in and ultimately it’s more than worth any sacrifices I have to make as long as his quality of life is maintained.
