Ex-hospitality worker here, similar time served.

Staff following basic hygiene like holding the glass in the right place should be basic training you're right... But if you're expecting the lines to get cleaned on Christmas Eve or Christmas day, it may be a case that if you keep smelling shite all day you should check your own shoes?

If you expect staff to do that, it's possible you may have other unrealistic and unreasonable expectations for service. For example, why is there anything wrong with talking to colleagues while pouring a pint? Ultimately, staff won't say thanks to you if they don't like your attitude and don't think you deserve to be thanked.

I do agree that standards are slipping, but I'd put that down to employers skipping corners with training, and employing the cheapest staff rather than the best.
