It’s the classic Glasgow story really that can be applied to all of the big housing schemes.

The council built Drumchapel to help ease overpopulation in the inner city. The old tenements in Glasgow were decaying and most didn’t even have their own toilets. When Drumchapel (Easterhouse, Castlemilk, Red Rd etc) were built, getting a house there was highly desirable.

Glasgows industry was decimated. Many out of work people turned to drink and drugs. A lot of the fortunate people who managed to keep work moved to pastures new.

In the 90’s and 00’s Drumchapel had lots of street gangs that would mean if you were a young man in your teens or early 20’s, walking up the wrong street could land you in trouble.

Drumchapel has been home to a few of the city’s notorious gangsters and a couple of ‘famous’ incidents have happened there too.

These days Drumchapel has lots of new developments. I know a few people from Drumchapel who are pretty well off. Tradesman and business owners etc who bought property in the newer developments. Drumchapels reputation precedes it.
