I like the Lake District out of season, as if the weather is shite there's more to do than if you're stuck somewhere in the sticks in Scotland, and there's pretty good bus services

One place I'd recommend is Coniston - you can get a bus through from Kendal which is just off the west coast main line at Oxenholme. Nice village with about 4 or 5 decent pubs, probably some cheap accommodation that time of year, and lots of different types of walking on the doorstep from lakeside ambles through to mountains like the Old Man
