This is nothing new.

Years ago I worked as an interpreter. Went to a doctor with my client. He was a truck driver with some cardiac problems and as he wasn't feeling well he wanted to ask if it is safe for him to driver 32 tonne truck.

The doctor looked through his documentation and said "ok, you know what we'll do? Take paracetamol and come back in three weeks we'll see how you feel".

The guy said " I can't take paracetamol because I am taking that other medicine and those two are in conflict".

"I see" said the doctor, checked something in the computer and then said "ok, so you know what we shall do? DON'T take any paracetamol and come back in three weeks we'll see how you feel".

Before we left surgery the client asked me if i could help him book a plane ticket so he can go back to his country to see "a real doctor".

I am not Scottish but I lived in Glasgow for 17 years. Everyone I know who is not sxottish - Poles, Czechs, Germans, Pakistanis, Italians, Fins, some of them actual doctors as well - are amazed at the deep held belief of the British doctors that paracetamol is a panaceum for everyghing. It's an amazing cultural phenomenon.
