My surgery is just going back to in person appointments, though they were always offered if a phone consultation warranted it. Could also get an emergency appointment that day if you called first thing. I had one moronic receptionist who thought she had a medical degree who I had to argue with once, but otherwise they've been fine enough, thankfully. Sometimes I'll have to wait a while (a few weeks) for non-emergency appointments, which is disruptive regarding certain medications that need to be reviewed by a doctor, but generally that's been OK too. I think it just depends on how well run your surgery is and how attentive your doctor is. Your doctor sounds like shit, and I'd change if you can. I understand they're under immense pressure and all, but there's no excuse for dismissing symptoms of what could be something serious, and that kind of attitude will only come back to bite the NHS in the arse down the line. Try to find out through word of mouth, etc. what the other practices in your area are like before you change would be my advice.
