I agree that more people living in the city centre is a good thing.

However things like specialist shops, department stores, cinemas, restaurants etc. will depend on people coming in from elsewhere. There's never going to be enough residents to justify, say, a high-end restaurant.

Right now the state of public transport and the cost/hassle of parking means that many choose to go elsewhere. It's probably no coincidence that cinemas and restaurants have opened at the Fort, Braehead, and Silverburn at the same time as the city centre has declined.

More Park and Ride facilities along the lines of Shields Rd might be the answer, but that only works if the transit to them is 100% reliable and stays running late into the night.
