A 10% tip in America will get you some real angry servers. 15-20% is much more common. 10% is see as the absolute bare minimum. The costs of eating out is on average a lot less though. Last time I was in America a few months ago I was shocked that I got a nicer draft beer in a charming little rural pub for £2.25. Didn't mind adding the customary $1 on that one.
