I drove through Birmingham recently and it felt particularly soulless, although far more of the city centre was bombed and/or redeveloped than Glasgow.

Birmingham at least has an outer ring road of sorts, so long distance traffic isn't skirting the city centre itself. Glasgow's problem is that we only got half of the inner ring road built, so most of the long distance traffic is funnelled through Charing Cross.
