I could not agree more. It should be like national service. On the other hand it's over 25 years since I worked in a proper customer service role, as in a "menial" one where respect isn't automatically conferred, and I *still* remember a huge number of the regular customers who were unfailingly lovely and made a wee local shop feel like a lynchpin of the community. I can recall 2 separate customers who we were the first people they spoke out loud to tell about the death of a parent. Like they came in for milk or whatever on their way home from the hospital. What an honour to be part of something like that. Most people are fantastic and we shouldn't lose sight of that.
