There seems to be an underlying hard-to-shake-off sense in the UK that cycling is just a hobby or sporting activity. Something you do as a bit of exercise or for fun, rather than simply as a means of getting from a to b.

When you see it that way, people's reactions to having a cyclist in front of them (not even necessarily a middle aged man in lycra, but a bog standard person on a bike) is slightly easier to understand, as bad as it is. They see someone on a bike as being out for a wee ride, wondering why they're using *their* bit of road while they're doing it.

Of course the reality is they're not out for a wee carefree jaunt, the person on a bike is using that bit of road because that's the route to where they're going. And they have every right to. If there was a safer, segregated way of getting where they were going, they'd likely take that instead.
