I agree with your first point. Sadly I think that is due to a negative attitude shift we have in this country where things are 'not my fault' or 'not my job' I won't sit here and say I'm blameless, as I use a car regularly. But I do try to walk locally to shops when possible.

If I want to take another mode of transport, cycling excluded. I need to walk 15 mins to the train into Queen street, or maybe 7 for a bus to somewhere in town, never used it to know where it goes. In rain or other crappy weather, its not very appealing when I can just jump in my car and be in town in the same time as it would take me to walk to the train station.

regarding cycle networks in other countries, I get what your saying but 2 countries that are always mentioned are Netherlands and Denmark. 2 countries that are significantly flatter than Glasgow/UK. Also have much lower rain levels than ours, and also countries who are generally more chilled than us. culturally speaking, not in as much of a rush as us brits always seem to be. I genuinely don't believe that if we increased the cycle network to say, accommodate for 100,000 cyclists per day (apologies, I have no idea how these things are measured) I can't see anywhere near that amount of people using them, as ultimately it does suit with our lifestyle. that's what I meant by culture change, not just networks. I think we have to learn to be more relaxed about getting around and so on.

I worked with a guy who cycled to work 99% of the time, he lived either 7 or 12 miles away, can't remember. We didn't have a shower at work, and he would be either sweating or soaking. I really don't think that's an appealing way to commute for most people.

Thanks also for that link!
