Don't drive myself but I did pose pretty much this exact question to a driver once.

What he told me was the costs are so high that doing it part time isn't really viable. Because even to uber you need to be fully licensed as a private hire driver you basically need to put in full time hours during peak times (i.e. evenings and weekends) to make enough profit to make it worth your while. Driving less or at lower demand times, you might just break even if you're lucky. It put me right off the idea. At this point if I was going to try and turn driving into a side hustle I'd look at delivery services, stuff that doesn't involve busing passengers around.
