It's not the existence of students that's bad (arguable), it's the ever increasing landmass being used for rental properties driving up prices of homes in the surrounding areas.

Student flats are run by private landlords and tend to be low quality housing that you're paying way over the odds in rent and factor fees to live in. Being cheap doesn't necessarily make it a deal.

It means people who live an work in the city center who want to own their own home are having to go toe to toe with large firms paying way over competitive rates to build up a portfolio to rent back to you or your kids for double what your mortgage would be.

The rental situation in this country is largely the reason that house prices have skyrocketed and the knock on effect is the increase in homelessness and poverty.

That poverty creates crime, and the homeless stay where the infrastructure and foot traffic it.

It's not an issue directly caused by student flats, but unless mum and dad have a few quid, students aren't the target market for buying the properties, investors are; and building homes specifically with that demographic in mind just makes the situation gradually worse rather than better.
