I suppose density will invariably drop over the decades - the tenements slums were ridiculously high density, amongst the highest in Europe. Multi-storey flats were the only way of getting anything close to the same number of people per acre in modern conditions.

Now the multis are (mostly) all coming down and being replaced with low-rise developments...
