Can remember getting smacked over the back of the hand in primary school with a wooden ruler on more than one occasion. If I had stayed in the UK, I am sure I would have gotten far worse in secondary.

Needing to rely on corporal punishment to me just says to me that there is a complete lack of more appropriate, non-violent, means of correcting behaviour.

The best non-violent means I can think of is wasting people's time in a productive way. For example, making school kids go and pick up all the rubbish and fast food containers they throw at their fat arses.
