I used to live in a place called Beeston near Nottingham. Place was vibrant enough. Okish high street with a decent greengrocer/fishmonger, couple of butchers, too many charity shops, loads of **amazing** pubs (wee village puts the whole of Glasgow to shame), and good bus links integrated with the tram (max fare £3.75 all day).

Tory council had a bright idea: bulldoze most it and bring in "beacon stores". What? Why go to the village for one Next or one Top Shop when *every* brand is there? Why destroy and eclectic high street for bland, "same as everywhere" corporates.

Made no dammed sense to me.

They should have been pushing independent retailers and using that to draw people out of the city.
