Actually originally the term dinghied meant to be ostracised or ignored. The term originates from when a sailor would be ostracised by putting him in a dinghy and towing it behind the ship.

Only later when dinghied became synonymous with ignored did it start to be used to refer to invitations rather than people themselves. If you dinghy an invitation, you ignore the person who sent it by not responding to them. You are really dinghying the person not the invite.

Therefore if you give a flimsy reason for not accepting an invite you are actually not dinghying it - because you did respond.
