Granted that was the original intention but road layouts have changed and new roads have been built to accommodate the motor car and at high speed.

Take the wide roads all round the city, now all one way giving drivers a wide road to race on. No need to worry about oncoming traffic.

The total lack of suitable crossing points is a joke. The crossing points are at the junctions where it is busier. Only there because it was easier to put them there.

There are a number of junctions with wide curved pavements that encourages drivers to race round them. The curvature increases the walking distance for pedestrians when they are crossing and leads to arseholes driving at pedestrians with the horn blaring. One such example is Beith Street at Benalder Street. Right outside large student accommodation blocks and no crossing points.

Lessons of course have been learned and modern road junctions are not like that or at least shouldn't be. All of the said curved junctions should be altered to make them right angled forcing drivers to slow down and make crossing the road safer and easier.

The irony is that it is now unsafe for a horse and cart to travel on the same roads for which they were designed for in the first place.
