An interesting hypothetical, but in your situation an SNP faction could elect their own nominee (who isn’t the SNP leader) as First Minister. If Labour vote for their option, the Conservatives for theirs etc, then “only” 32 of 64 SNP members need to vote for their option to outvote the Conservatives and win. Only if the Conservatives, Labour, Lib Dem’s and Greens join forces can they outvote the SNP, and ironically the deciding vote would come down to....Nicola Sturgeon MSP, who is presumably (but who knows, it’s a hypothetical!) going to vote for the Parliamentary SNPs nominee.

To your last bit...yes. He thinks the Scottish Government is independent in all but name already. He’s still raging that Sturgeon didn’t sack that SNP MP who went on the train to London with covid, despite me telling him that she (well the SNP) chucked her out the party, but nobody can remove an MP until an election as they’re elected by their constituents. But apparently Sturgeon stopped the Queen from doing it or something. I try not to take much notice to be honest.
