As a fellow foreigner (but in Glasgow for 20 years) I think the biggest difference to other countries is that you feel treated like a human being first and a woman second. It's perfectly possible for a girl to pay a stranger a compliment or crack a stupid joke without people automatically assuming you hit on them so it's possible to start an innocuous conversation and just blether away. The more difficult bit is that if you are interested in someone, it might be necessary to hand them your phone number with the words: just in case you were too shy to ask.

I quite liked online dating but I got a spouse out of it years ago (and found a lot of nice restaurants etc).

Go to museums and exhibitions and gigs and concerts and just chat to people who enjoy the same things as you. I hope you meet someone amazing, or even several.
