It's the same as anywhere really, it's always been determined by whoever your family supports and it just happened to be the case and fairly unique to these islands that one set of supporters were mainly catholic and the others were protestant.

Nowadays religion plays so little part in peoples everyday lives but they still cling onto it in some respect and will go to chapel or church a handful of times a year and that dictates what school they send their kids to and they'll mostly be surrounded by people who support the same team.

The biggest difference in the rivalry in 2023 is more political, with Celtics biggest fan group being left wing, pro immigration, pro refugee, united Ireland, pro Palestine etc, whereas the other mob biggest fan group is right wing, pro union, royalist, etc etc.

That's not applicable across the board though, most of my mates that are Rangers fans are vehemently left wing and our board is full of Tories like Bankier & Nicholson etc.

But all of this stuff is what makes it such a great rivalry and what makes football so compelling. Its predominantly a place for working class men and women, it's socio political and that's the case in almost every country where football is the main sport, there are left and right wing teams and it's all the better for it. it's a place for political expression and for working class people to use their voice, see Besiktas in Turkey just this past weekend as a great example and that partly explains why Governments have been continue to disproportionately target football fans across the world.
