There are also misconceptions about both sides because people live in a social media bubble. This sub especially has such a big user base of folk I’m convinced have never seen daylight.
Yes there is an extremist element in both sets of support and these are the ones that constantly make the news and go viral. Nobody is interested in the 49,500 supporters that went to the game, then went home without incident. The other 500 who were part of the young team chasing each other, being drunk and loutish are the ones that grab headlines and become the subject of discussion.
Out in the real world both teams draw their support from every section of society. From rich to poor. From left to right. I know Celtic fans who are Unionists and Rangers fans who want independence. I know Rangers fans who hate the monarchy and Celtic fans who served in the armed forces who hate the anti-monarchist and IRA supporting element if their crowd.
Both clubs are institutions and deep rooted in Scottish society and culture, especially in the West of Scotland. Family ties, social circles, politics and religion could have an impact. Sometimes it’s as simple as who was the better team at the time they got into football. |
