They were influenced by horror comics of the 1950s. They were so bad that, in 1954, a guy in the US wrote a book about them called 'Seduction of the Innocent', which led to a court case and the introduction of the Comics Code Authority. Many of these US comics were reprinted here or found their way over to Glasgow as ballast on ships.
