21F - non-parent weighing in.

If I needed to, I would. I don’t think there’s any shame in being fr with your kids if you’re going through a financially challenging time, and it was perhaps best to then get the kids pitching in - whether it’s older teens temporality contributing towards the family rent in time’s of need, helping with the food shop, maybe paying for their own outings, etc. That’s fair.

However, I don’t plan on having kids until I can afford to….afford them. That includes all their emotional and financial needs to set them up for a good life with hobbies, education, toes and going out on the weekend to see their friends.

As for charging my kids ‘rent’ (as some parents call it, which is quite weird and cold IMO)…. I am not a landlord and they didn’t sign a contract to agree to owe me money by being born.

I had the sex. I had the pregnancy. I chose not to have an abortion. I - hopefully - wanted the child and the responsibilities that come along with it.

It’s my responsibility.

Kids should have part-time jobs to set them up to compete in a job climate which requires them to have work experience, though. Insofar as they can manage and it doesn’t interrupt their education.

I also believe in encouraging your kids to save. If it’s easier to have them send you, say, £20 a week to put away, that’s fine. I just personally wouldn’t birth a human and then tell them to go to work so they can fund my mortgage, ygm?
