Shelter can be really really helpful when it comes to shitty landlord stuff. They can advise you on your rights in a situation like this.

There are standards in your tennancy agreement which will specify what is your job and what is your landlords. By default, this would be an issue for your landlord.

I would tell your landlord that you will only buy a new machine if you can take it with you at the end of your tennancy. Get them to agree to that and at least you arent buying *them* a machine.
