Depends where you live.
I live in the city center and can say it's an absolute nightmare trying to find any kind of affordable food variety.

Most shops within walking distance are Tesco Metros, which mostly just have the essentials and a few fresh veg that's hoaching with wee bugs. Or the Aldi on High street. Good shop for most things but I'd avoid their food if you're looking for ethically sourced.

Tesco Metro stocks "Happy Egg Co" eggs but there's dispute around their marketing being a high degree of bullshit.

Same goes for chicken. I've wandered the city looking for chicken meat that at least says free range on it, couldn't find a single shop selling it. Everything's just "class A" whatever the fuck that means.

At the end of the day unless you can actually see the welfare of the animals in question, there's no guarantee that they're being treated to the standard you'd like. Like you say, "free range" really means bugger all.

Similar is the "dolphin friendly" tuna. Inspection only happens on the shoreline when the boats are docked, there's no guarantee that the fishermen aren't breaking the rules off shore. Likewise, any certification of loveliness is to be taken with a big pinch of salt.

You may have a bit more luck if you go looking for a Waitrose, maybe M&S too, but you'll be paying way over the odds.
