It used to be that a day ticket was cheaper than a return, so people bought them off they didn't need them, effectively inventivising what you've described. When smart tickets came in the pricing structure changed so that you would only really buy a day ticket if you needed 3+ trips, and therefore fewer people would discard them, and typically later in the day.
