You could search on www.rightmove.co.uk for properties in the Merchant City to see how you feel about the rent costs. People often recommend Dennistoun as a cheaper place to live near the centre. But some people also say that rent prices in Dennistoun are going up over the years. It's worth a look. I guess you could get the train from Dennistoun too but I don't know if you need to connect or not. If you search for Dennistoun on this subreddit you'll find various threads about it including which parts to avoid.
