Could try meetup.com and see if there's anything there that takes your interest. Met some decent people through that when I moved to town recently and needed to expand my social circle a bit.
Granted all the ones I go to tend to be one-offs like pub, comedy club, walks about meet etc. But there's some for specific activities and themes if you have a look.
