In my personal experience I would say until you get to know people, avoid the 'sit down' events. A pub let's you get up and mingle but cafe or restaurant you're going to spend the whole night surrounded by the same people. Nothing worse than realising 5 minutes in you're going to be spending the whole night baby sitting the crazy person while the opposite end of the table looks like they're having fun.
The one I regularly attend is Glasgow geek social, next meets 26th. It's run by a redditor here actually and a few faces I recognise from the reddit meet! Everyone there is pretty sound.
There's an anxiety the first time going to a group with no familiar faces to be sure but if they're run well, the organisers will make sure you're not left hovering in a corner. It helps to have a clear picture on your profile too. |
