There was a post on /r/scotland just two weeks ago from a woman asking if it's OK to make the first move with men.
This is it lads, the tide is turning, it's now our turn to be pursued.

Seriously OP, go for it, be polite and clear (as others said, the note might not work), but be prepared for him to look as if the wee men in his head that operate the controls have downed tools: this doesn't happen often enough for us to have a clear idea of how to react.
Usual advice about coffee at lunchtime in a busy café as opposed to midnight hillclimbing, etc...
