1. You current/previous employer should be on the hook for your injury. Use their insurance to get your back sorted. Expect various sessions of massage/exercise/stretching/etc. It hurts but it works (trust me, been through that wringer).
1. Look to the IT sector. You could maybe parlay your skills into UI work, and there may well be funded courses available at local colleges.
1. Jobs like the above require a lot of sitting, consider a sit-stand desk or, at least, getting up for a walk around every 20-30 mins.
1. The job centre is a place to go just to keep yourself right but IME they are completely useless. It's down to you.
1. Write are large CV and then chop it down I to various versions for different roles. Tart yourself around, get interviews. You'll never fail an interview even if they don't accept you. Ask them for feedback and use that next time.
1. Get to meetups. There's loads and they usually have jobs going. Network, network, network.
1. Fire some things into devianart or wherever (Krita, GIMP etc are free, no need to pay Adobe) to create a portfolio if you want go that route.
