My NHS dentist of 35 years went private last year, the reason being that their level of service was being impacted too severely by cutbacks in NHS funding for dentistry. I opted to stay with them and pay up monthly with Denplan (£16 a month), as I've always been happy with their service and NHS dentists are hard to find around here. They're keeping the kids on as NHS patients, at least. I can't say I'm happy about needing to pay for it, but I'm getting longer appointments (30 minutes instead of 10) and check ups and hygienist appointments are included.
