No, you cannot "charge" them.

What you can do is report the matter to the police, giving as much detail as you can. They will then... do nothing. Sorry, but that's reality.

You are legally allowed to use "reasonable force" to defend yourself. The rule of thumb would be the same level of force being directed at you.

You (or a friend) should have called 999 and asked for the police. They should respond to an active situation.

Sorry this has happened. Rest assured that it is not normal.
