Given that a lot of cycle lanes were created without any sort of joined up plan and reenter the main carriageway at sometimes ridiculous points it's often safer to stay on the road and cycle there.

Also, the protective bumps they put on some cycle lanes to stop cars entering also stops the roadsweeping vehicles from clearing them so all the shite from the road ends up accumulating in the cycle lanes making the surfaces dangerous.
