From the 40s to the 60s we flooded the roads with cars to the extent that we killed the trams' very business model.

Suddenly insurmountable congestion = highly unreliable, slow tram services. As congestion got worse, people used the trams less and drove more, so sending tram networks the world over into a death spiral.
