Train tickets go on sale about 3 months in advance. Cheapest are called "super advance" or something like thst. You may need to buy from the train operators website to get these (eg Avanti for the West Coast Mainline, Scotrail etx). There are third party websites too like The Trainline.com which can offer ticket split deals on some routes (eg instead of single to point C, you get singles from A-B then B-C saving money).
There are also specific tickets aimed at tourists travelling around. Edit, these are called a 'Britrail Pass'.
Our train network is expensive, complex and unreliable. Sorry!
